Per Tricia~
I am not sure how I raised two boys without making homemade
applesauce, but I am even more embarrassed after learning this
week how utterly easy it is. And tasty. I chose Empire apples.
I was pleased with the brown sugar and vanilla flavors
and will plan to make the again with my next pork dish - I
just love apples with pork.
As simple as this recipe was to make, I chose the easier option
by preparing the chunky applesauce. I really like the flavor, the
brown sugar and vanilla were perfect.
I actually had some apples that were just hanging around since we seem
to be on a pear kick right now, so this was a perfect way to use them up.
I served it with a dollop of cool whip and it was wonderful.
This is an excellent way to use up apples or pears before they
start to get too soft, and it makes a perfect little dessert.
It's such an easy recipe I can't believe I don't make it more!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I like the idea of using this as a dessert with whipped cream! Light and lovely. So glad you both enjoyed this one, too.
ReplyDeleteGood idea about the pears... I think I have some! Happy that you enjoyed this. We did too. I make this or some similar version pretty often at this time of year, it really is pretty easy!
ReplyDeleteThis was a delicious recipe and so easy too. I loved what the vanilla did for the apple sauce. Glad you both enjoyed this. Have a great weekend:)
ReplyDeleteOh ladies, both of your applesauces look great…Nana, I love the idea of putting cool whip on top and enjoying it as a dessert. Tricia…your photos are lovely! We really enjoyed this one too! Loved the hint of vanilla! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good idea topping it with whipped cream. Easy dessert!
ReplyDeleteThis was a first for me too. Who knew it would be so easy? Not just that, but it's been years since I've even eaten apple sauce. Sometimes it's fun to "discover" an old standard.
ReplyDeletePorkchops and applesauce… definitely. I never made applesauce and it is ridiculously easy. And you are right it is a great way to use up apples, even if they are browning or bruised.
ReplyDeleteYes, the brown sugar and vanilla add wonderful flavors to the applesauce. Glad you both enjoyed this one. Love your golden pumpkins, Tricia!
ReplyDeleteI haven't made applesauce in years but it wasn't this easy then. Definitely a repeat here, too.
ReplyDeleteLove the teamwork by Mother n Daughter! Enjoying both versions in this post! I will be making this again, soon!
ReplyDeleteYour pretty pumpkins? WANT!
ReplyDeleteI had never made applesauce before either, so this was a pleasant surprise. I'm actually in the middle of baking with it, and hope my experiment works out.
Tricia - I am not sure I have ever made this before either. I was a bad mom when my kids were small (they were lucky I knew how to make scrambled eggs at that point, let alone homemade baby food :-) )
ReplyDeleteNana - like the chunky version. That looks more like what I THOUGHT this dessert would look like....
Both look so inviting! We loved how easy & delicious this was and will probably never waste another apple again. Have a lovely weekend! xoxo
ReplyDeleteNana: what a nice added touch, cool whip sounds like a winning combination with homemade apple compote!
ReplyDeleteTricia: lovely, shiny red apples and the pictures are just wonderful - I love the very autumnal copper porcelain (?) pumkins that you used as the backdrop for your pictures. Although I was a day late with my post, we still really enjoyed this homemade apple compote quite a bit - but then we always do as it is a staple at our house.
Have a wonderful Sunday, ladies and greeting from very rainy Bonn!
Is this a midwest thing? My mother always made homemade applesauce and I do as well. As does daughter Melissa. Mussleman's Apple Sauce. Not in our houses!!! I agree with you, Nana. I love chunky applesauce. But, I went with Dorie's technique and recipe and found it pretty darn tasty. Both your versions look delicious.
ReplyDeleteHi Tricia and Nana, I too was surprised at how easy it is to make apple sauce. I processed my easy chunky version to make it smooth. Both of yours look great! And Nana, I covet your lovely copper moulds.
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm so behind on commenting...I think I'm the only one who didn't really like this recipe. It almost makes me want to try it again. I see lots of applesauce in my near future. Tricia, I love the "pouting peapod" story. Glad to know we aren't alone!
ReplyDeleteThis was so easy and good - a nice change from the usual apple spices.
